The second hilliest city in the country, Yonkers' distinctive topography presents unique challenges for the City as it responds to winter weather events.

The City of Yonkers’ snow and ice control efforts are in place to ensure that residents are safe from snow, ice and extreme cold; major arterial roadways are open, clear and safe for vehicular travel, especially emergency vehicles; and all public City streets are open, clear and safe for vehicular travel at the earliest possible time after the conclusion of a winter weather event.

Snow plowing and salting is performed by the Department of Public Works’ Street Maintenance Division. During the cold-weather months, the City monitors winter weather and roadway conditions, and is prepared to respond to a storm in a variety of ways, depending on the severity of the storm.

The City of Yonkers maintains:

• 654 lane miles of roads
• 450 dead-end streets and cul-de-sacs
• 100 bridges
• 76 parks, playgrounds and facilities
• 45 sets of stairs and 4 pedestrian bridges

There are 11 snow emergency routes.

The City’s salt barn stores up 7,500 tons of salt.

During a storm, the City applies 15,000 gallons of brine with organics to the roadways.

Salt is applied at a rate of at least 300 pounds per lane mile.

DPW utilizes a fleet of 32 large plow/salters and 14 small plow/salters.
