The Yonkers Green City Community Leadership Award provides a grant award up to $10,000 to support a new or existing environmental and/or community improvement project within Yonkers. The Yonkers Green City Student Leadership Award provides an award of $1,000 to one student nominee to support a school program or project in Yonkers. Awardees will be publicly recognized by the City of Yonkers.

Applications must be received by Wednesday, March 23rd, 2022 at 4:00 PM

Eligible applicants for the Yonkers Green City Community Leadership Award include Yonkers-based not-for-profit organizations, businesses, and neighborhood groups.  To be eligible for the grant award, applicants are required to dedicate matching funds of at least 20 percent of the requested award amount (up to $10,000) for a new or existing project or program. Neighborhood associations are exempt from the matching funds requirement.

Eligible applicants for the Yonkers Green City Student Leadership Award include Yonkers Public School teachers and students. A teacher may submit an application nominating a student for the award (with the student’s consent) or a student may submit a self-nominating application with the endorsement of a Yonkers Public School teacher and the student’s school principal. Funds awarded to the winning student nominee must be used by the student’s school to support a new or existing project or program. 

All applications received will be reviewed and evaluated by members of the Yonkers Green City Advisory Committee and the City of Yonkers. Awards will be presented to applicants that best exhibit local leadership in at least one of the categories included in the Award Criteria, and demonstrate how the proposed project will improve environmental, social and/or economic conditions within Yonkers. 

Demonstrate leadership in any of the following categories:

• Natural Resource Protection – including, but not limited to air/water quality improvement, habitat preservation, land conservation, and/or tree canopy improvement.
• Waste Reduction – including, but not limited to recycling, composting, diversion and/or public education and awareness efforts.
• Environmentally Preferable Practices – use of green products or processes in organizational operations
• Green Energy/Energy Efficiency – use of renewable energy, energy efficient building design, or other innovative green building features that result in low building emissions.
• Green Transportation – advancing use and access to zero-emission transportation alternatives; supporting improvements to pedestrian transportation infrastructure.
• Community Health and Wellness – action taken to mitigate a community health concern and/or improving community access to healthy food, recreation, and/or economic opportunity.
