FIRE CODE ENFORCEMENT

The Yonkers Fire Department plays an integral role in building and fire code enforcement through the following efforts:

Plan Review - Our Code Enforcement Officials review and evaluate proposed plans for new construction, as well as alterations and renovations, to ensure compliance with New York State Building and Fire Prevention Code. Our primary focus is on the Fire Code elements of the proposal.

New Construction Inspections - New construction inspections are performed by our Code Enforcement Officials on all new commercial and multi-family (3 or more dwelling units) projects. Our inspections are performed throughout the project progress. Fire safety systems such as fire alarm, fire sprinkler and standpipe, smoke control, fire command center features, kitchen hood and suppression systems, among others, constitute a large portion of our inspection work.

Renovation and Alteration Inspections - Similar to new construction, our Code Enforcement Officials will be involved with inspecting renovation work and alteration work. Our Code Enforcement Officials are up to the challenge of ensuring existing buildings undergoing these types of work are done so just as diligently as a new construction project.

Property Maintenance Inspections - Yonkers Fire Department Code Enforcement Officials and apparatus field companies perform routine inspections of existing commercial and multifamily properties. Condition of the interior and exterior of properties are considered at this time. Owners and operators of commercial and multi-family (3 dwelling units or more) properties shall be familiar with their duties in maintaining properties. We ensure these responsibilities are fulfilled and building systems are maintained and functioning, and occupants are provided safety.

Public Assembly Inspections - Annual inspections of public assemblies and private schools are conducted by our Code Enforcement Officials so that large groups gathering at these locations are provided with a code complaint facility. Facility owners/managers and event organizers shall ensure that they have Certified Crowd Managers among staff if groups exceed 1,000 persons.

Oil Tank Removal and Installation Inspections - When oil tanks are removed and/or installed, our Code Enforcement Officials perform inspections to verify if there is any contamination, ensure the work is in accordance with code, and document tank status within the property file.

Operating Permits and Licensing - Yonkers Fire Prevention issues operating permits and licensing for various activities as required by code. Call Fire Prevention at 914-377-7525 to verify and obtain an Operating Permit or License if it applies to your business or work scope.

Tent and Membrane Structure Inspections - Our Code Enforcement Officials will be responsible for inspecting tents and membrane structures at all locations and special events. Installers and users shall be responsible for proper installation and use at all times.

Food Truck Inspections - Beginning in the 2020 Fire Code of New York State, mobile food trucks many require annual inspection depending on their use. Owners and operators of food trucks can call Fire Prevention at 914-377-7525 for information.
