First Responders Disability Registry
This program is a new and unique plan to aid Yonkers residents with special needs in emergency situations. Specialized information is entered into a database to be accessed, with alerts, to Yonkers Police and Fire Departments and EMS services in the event of an emergency located at a resident’s home. The goal of the program is to eliminate or lessen emotional trauma, fear and conflict when first responders enter homes of those with special needs.
Those with the following special needs, but not limited to, should register:
- physical and medical challenges
- developmental challenges, mental illness, PTSD
- vision and hearing challenges
- aged, language barriers, hoarders, service animals, etc.
Enrollment in the registry is dependent upon self-reporting. Privacy concerns are recognized and addressed. Enrollment is fully compliant with applicable regulations.

Arson Awareness Week 2021 (May 2 - 8)
States and communities are being urged to recognize Arson Awareness Week this May 2-8. This effort is promoted by The United States Fire Administration (USFA),in partnership with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Coalition Against Insurance Fraud, International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), International Code Council (ICC), Namic Association Services, National Association of State Fire Marshals, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and National Volunteer Fire Council.
Estimates of intentional fires from 2010-2014 were compiled according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS). The research was conducted by the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) and the annual fire department experience survey conducted by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The following estimates were derived from the study:
261,330 - The number of intentional fires reported to fire departments each year.
440 civilian deaths, 1,310 civilian injuries, $1 billion in direct property damage. - Annual losses.
It is clear the toll for intentionally set fires is high, so what motivates someone to set fires to property? Some of the reasons arsonists may set fires range from curiosity, attempt to concealing other crimes, excitement, revenge, and insurance fraud. This year, due to recent and ongoing occurrences nationwide, the 2021 Arson Awareness Week theme is Arson During Civil Unrest. The USFA states the messaging of this year "highlights critical actions first responders must take to help ensure a safe response to arson fires due to civil unrest incidents."
Both first responders and civilians should take time to review Arson Awareness Week materials for not only this current year, but all available educational media. In addition, the Yonkers Fire Department urges all to spreading awareness through interaction with family and friends, as well as through social media platforms.
The following link will bring you to the U.S. Fire Administration's Arson Awareness Page.
Please take time to explore and educate yourself. First Responders should be sure to review the critical actions outlined, as well take time to attend the following webinar provided by USFA:
