What is the Citizen Police Academy?
The Yonkers Police Department Citizen Police Academy is a program that invites members of our community into our classrooms and training facilities to give our community members a hands-on training experience and an in-depth view of the many facets of police work.
The goal of this program is to provide an opportunity for members of our community to learn about the basic operations of the Yonkers Police Department. In turn, it is also an opportunity for the Yonkers Police Department to better understand the needs of our community, from the members of our community, throughout this program. It is our hope that the program will aid in developing mutually beneficial working relationships between our Officers and the community that we serve.
There is no cost to attend this course. All participants will receive Citizen Police Academy apparel.
The Citizen Police Academy is not an attempt to impart any particular skill or certified training on any participant, nor is it intended to be a pre-service academy.
Academy syllabus includes:
-Laws of Arrest-Use of Force
-Patrol Procedures
-Firearms Training
-Defensive Tactics
-YPD Facility Tours
And much more…
Academy Information:
- Class size will be limited to 20 attendees.
- The academy will begin on June 26, 2024. Academy classes will take place each Wednesday for 12-weeks beginning at 6:30 pm and concluding at approximately 9:30 pm.
- The 2024 academy will conclude on September 11, 2024.
- Classes will be held primarily at the Yonkers Police Training Division, located inside the First Precinct at 730 E Grassy Sprain Road, Yonkers, NY 10710
- Particular classes may take place at alternate facilities (facility tours, demonstrations, etc) but will remain within Yonkers.
Attendee Requirements & Applications:
- Participants must either live or work in Yonkers, New York.
- Participants must attend 80% of classes for successful completion and graduation.
- A cursory background check will be conducted on all applicants. Those with felony convictions or an extensive criminal history may not be accepted.
