Mission Statement

The mission of the Yonkers Youth Court is to operate as a highly effective diversion program within the Yonkers Police Department. A program promoting Civic Education and Restorative Justice within the City of Yonkers. Serving a dual purpose; court membership promotes Youth leadership and knowledge of the Criminal Justice System while offering Juvenile Offenders a sentencing alternative focused on reducing recidivism and encouraging ones’ success.

The Yonkers Youth Court

The Yonkers Youth Court provides supervision, support, and sentencing alternatives for first time youth offenders. At time of arrest, youth offenders committing misdemeanor crimes are given this opportunity as an alternative to the Westchester Family Court. Youth Court hearings are conducted by the youth membership comprised of trained students from various local high schools. Youth Court members acting as a court panel are tasked with reviewing the criminal act, the impact it caused and determining effective resolutions for the at-risk peer appearing before them. Resolutions include community service activities, various workshops focusing on smart choices and healthy living, and overall support resources to prevent future criminal involvement.

Youth Court Membership

Youth Court Members are contributing to the growing relationship between the Yonkers Police Department, Youth, and their community. Their primary role is to encourage the Youth offender to appreciate and understand the Youth Court opportunity and make amends for their mistakes. In addition, membership provides a social outlet, networking with community professionals, and the opportunity to build a resume with experience and community involvement. Interested Youth meeting the following criteria are encouraged to join:

  • A Yonkers Resident
  • Between the Ages of Thirteen (13) and Eighteen (18) Years Old
  • A Student in Good Standing
  • Evening Availability and Flexibility
