STEP 1 - READ THE CIVIL SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT - DOWNLOAD HERE

The Civil Service Announcement for Police Officer is the official document from the City of Yonkers Department of Civil Service detailing the requirements for the position of Probationary Police Officer and includes instructions on how to file. READ THIS DOCUMENT COMPLETELY. You, the applicant, are responsible for making sure that you meet all the requirements outlined in the announcement and that you follow all instructions explicitly - failure to comply with the announcement instructions may disqualify you from sitting for examination.

Basic eligibility requirements:

  • Applicants must be 18 - 34 years of age by the exam date*
  • Applicants must be legal residents of Westchester, Nassau, Putnam, Rockland, or Bronx Counties*
  • Filing fee of $100 (check or money order only) must be included with application*
  • High School Diploma or GED required at time of appointment
  • United States citizenship required at time of appointment
  • Valid New York State Class D Driver's License required at time of appointment

* Age exceptions available for military veterans; Yonkers residents > 3 months get preference in appointment; filing fee waivers available at the Department of Civil Service for eligible applicants - read the Civil Service Announcement for additional information.

  • Yonkers Police Records Division, 104 South Broadway, 2nd Floor, Cacace Justice Center
    Monday thru Friday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

STEP 2 - GET THE CIVIL SERVICE APPLICATION - DOWNLOAD HERE

The Civil Service Application must be filled out by you, the applicant. Fill all boxes COMPLETELY and double-check everything before filing the application. Make sure you print and SIGN the application where indicated. Include a valid e-mail address.

The online PDF-fillable version is preferred for clarity, however printed copies can be obtained at the same locations above. If handwritten, make sure you PRINT CLEARLY, LEGIBLY, and NEATLY.

STEP 3 - FILE THE CIVIL SERVICE APPLICATION

Applications MUST be filed in-person. Only the following TWO locations will accept completed applications for filing:

  • Department of Civil Service, 1 Larkin Center, 2nd Floor, Riverfront Library Building
    Monday thru Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Yonkers Police Recruitment Headquarters, 127 North Broadway, PAL Building
    Monday thru Friday, 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM; Saturday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Only personal checks or money orders will be accepted for payment - no cash, no credit cards. Fee waivers can only be accepted at the Department of Civil Service location.

Filing deadline is Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at 4:30 PM - DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST DAY! FILE EARLY!

STEP 4 - FILL OUT THE APPLICANT QUESTIONNAIRE AT YPDFORM.COM

The applicant questionnaire captures additional data. Please complete and submit the form only one time. It will be cross-referenced with your Civil Service Application. This form is not a substitute for the above - you MUST complete a Civil Service Application and file in-person as outlined in the announcement.

STEP 5 - GET READY FOR THE EXAM

Read the New York State Entry-Level Law Enforcement Officer Test Guide.

Read the Medical and Physical Fitness Standards and Procedures for Police Officer Candidates.

The Yonkers Police Department will offer FREE instructional courses prior to the exam to help you, the applicant, get the highest score possible. All Yonkers residents registered to sit for the exam are eligible. Check back after the filing period closes for course details and dates.

UPDATE: Yonkers residents who submitted a Civil Service Application will be receiving a notice in the mail with information regarding the free instructional courses.

Note for Police Officers from other jurisdictions: the Yonkers Police Department does not accept lateral transfers; all applicants must sit for examination and all hiring will be based off of a certified list of eligible candidates as provided by the Department of Civil Service. Prior service candidates are eligible to bypass Academy instruction (Basic Course for Police Officers) at the discretion of the Yonkers Police Training Division.
