Police Officer JAMES J. CUMMINGS #39

APPOINTED: March 1, 1913
DIED: October 12, 1925

James J. Cummings Like most men Cummings joined the police department hoping for a better life. Born in Yonkers on June 4, 1884, he had worked for a while as a machinist. Following his police appointment he was assigned to the 1st precinct and walked a foot post for nine years. From August 1922 to May of 1924 he served in the Detective Bureau. During that time he married his childhood sweetheart which resulted in the birth of his son Pierre in February of 1925. Life seemed good. Then, in October of that year PO Cummings became sick. He entered a NYC hospital where, after a month, he died at the age of only 42 years. He was married for two years and his son was only 8 months old. Jim Cummings was very popular and was described by his commander, Captain Quirk, as being one of his most efficient officers. The 1st precinct was draped in mourning. An honor guard and 90 fellow officers stood information at his funeral as a sign of respect and a final farewell.
 

Police Officer Arthur Daly #104
APPOINTED: March 1, 1913
RETIRED: March 3,1940

Arthur DalyBorn in County Kerry, Kilarney Ireland on the 4th of July in 1880, Arthur Daly came to the United States about 1908. He gained employment as a trolley car conductor and set out to raise a family. He ultimately had 9 children. Upon his appointment to the police department he worked in the 1st precinct on foot patrol. Seven years later, on July 16, 1920, he was assigned to traffic duty where he remained for most of his career. According to his daughter, her father was proud of his ability to speak the Irish Gaelic language. He was a pipe smoker, and he loved to do, what was then known as, the Irish "Stack of Barley" dance. PO Daly developed severe arthritis and was determined to be physically unfit to perform his police duties. He was retired on a disability pension. In his retirement he was a big Yankees baseball fan and loved to garden. On December 31, 1965 retired PO Arthur Daly died at the age of 85 years.
